Vietjet signs deal with AV AirFinance (KKR), eyes additional 737 Max aircraft

New $300M financing to expand fleet; talks with Boeing despite missed deliveries

Vietnamese low-cost airline Vietjet announced today April 10 the signing of a financing agreement worth 300 million dollars with AV AirFinance, a partner of the investment fund Kkr. The agreement is aimed at supporting the growth plans of the airline's fleet. Through a press release issued today, Vietjet underlined how this financing agreement is part of a broader financing strategy that has seen the airline sign contracts with US partners for a total value of 4 billion dollars.

The Vietnamese air company also reiterated the existence of an agreement with the American giant Boeing for the purchase of 200 B-737 Max airplanes. The original agreement dates back to 2016, and was the subject of a review on the occasion of the visit of the then US President Donald Trump (in his first term) to Vietnam in 2019.

Despite the order for a significant number of units, Vietjet specified that at the time of that order no aircraft had been delivered. However, it expressed optimism regarding the start of deliveries of the first B-737 Max during the current year. At the same time, it announced that it is currently engaged in negotiations with Boeing to evaluate the possibility of further expanding the existing order, with a view to consolidating its position in the regional and international air transport market. This is also evidenced by the MoU signed just over a year ago with the European giant Airbus, for the purchase of 20 widebody A-330/900 aircraft (see AVIONEWS).
