Trump threatens to cancel Boeing deal for new Air Force One

The two VC-25B aircraft based on the B-747/8I were scheduled to be operational in 2024

US President Donald Trump said at an event in Miami that he plans to terminate Boeing's contract to build the next Air Force One if the company fails to meet delivery deadlines. Trump said in a tone that left no room for ambiguity: "We will have a new Air Force One if Boeing finally completes this already overdue delivery. If not, we may look elsewhere".

The delays, attributed in part to the difficulties arising from the pandemic emergency, have had long-term repercussions on the production chain, especially for a project as complex and delicate as the presidential plane, which requires exceptional safety procedures and technical standards. These problems have led to contractual losses of more than two billion dollars for Boeing, according to institutional sources and market analyses. The Seattle giant, for its part, has assured that it is working intensely to accelerate the production and delivery process of the new plane, although it has not provided a precise timeframe. Analysts point out that the project represents a significant technological and management challenge, with implications not only for the image of the American administration.

Air Force One is the radio name of the United States Air Force (USAF) aircraft that carries the US President. In the event of an emergency, such as terrorist attacks or war actions that threaten the safety of the President, this aircraft is used as a mobile office, reducing the risk of an attack on the President. It can be refuelled in flight to extend its autonomy in cases of need.

The subject of the latest order signed in 2028 for 3.9 billion dollars was the supply of two VC-25Bs based on the Boeing B-747/8I, and on February 20, 2020, the executive part of the transformation of the two aircraft began, which were to be operational in 2024.
