South Korea: another Jeju Air plane has undercarriage problems

Precautionary U-turn and return to Seoul today for another commercial aircraft

A plane operated by Jeju Air that took off from Seoul this morning was forced to reverse course towards the airport of departure due to problems with the landing gear. The inconvenience occurred the day after the tragic accident that occurred yesterday involving an aircraft of the same airline, a B-737/800 operated by the South Korean low-cost airline Jeju Air, which after a belly landing (belly landing without landing gear), ended its tragic run against the airport perimeter, catching fire after having first overwhelmed the structure of the ILS antenna. In the accident, 179 of the 181 people on board died; only 2 survived (see AVIONEWS).

In today's case, shortly after takeoff, the crew detected an anomaly in the landing gear system, a Jeju Air spokesperson explained. Although the pilot was able to temporarily manage the situation with the support of the airline's technical center, the decision was made to return to Seoul as a precaution.

The aircraft landed without further problems at 7:20 local time, and the passengers were then re-booked onto other flights. The specific model of the aircraft affected today was not confirmed by the spokesperson, but according to local press reports it was also a Boeing -737/800.
