Emergency evacuation at Sarajevo airport due to bomb scare

Security measures strengthened; flights suspended and investigation underway

Sarajevo International Airport was immediately evacuated today following a bomb scare. Its authorities received a threat that led to the temporary suspension of all incoming and outgoing flights; some of the flights were diverted to other airports. Police units, bomb squads and anti-terrorism forces are currently engaged in verification operations.

"After receiving an anonymous tip about the alleged placement of explosive devices on the premises of Sarajevo International Airport, the competent services immediately took all necessary measures in accordance with security protocols. In cooperation with the competent security agencies, the complete safety of all passengers and airport employees is ensured. Sarajevo International Airport will continue to monitor the situation and we will communicate any additional information in a timely manner", reads a statement from the airport operator.

The incident occurred shortly after the departure of Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, who concluded her visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina. In recent times, the Bosnian capital has witnessed a series of similar bomb scares, which have mainly affected educational institutions and which have so far proven unfounded.
