NATO bolsters forces in face of Russian threat
Significant expansion in response to tensions
NATO is ready to significantly increase the number of troops and weapons available to member States to face the threat posed by Russia, as reported by "Welt am Sonntag". The German daily newspaper has had access to internal documents of the Alliance, which outline a significant increase in the military capabilities required. According to this source, while in 2021 it was believed that 82 combat brigades were adequate, it is now expected to need 131, highlighting an increase of 49 units.
In addition to the increase in troops, NATO also seems to be aiming to strengthen its equipment, especially in terms of air defense and long-range precision weapons. The number of ground-based air defense units should increase significantly, from 293 to 1,467, with the inclusion of advanced systems such as Patriot, Iris T-SLM and Skyranger as well as devices for short- and medium-range protection. The helicopter fleet will also see an increase, from 90 to 104 units.
These plans signal a robust Alliance response to perceived security challenges, reflecting heightened geopolitical tensions in Europe and the need to adapt to new threat realities.
