A Bombardier CRJ-200ER aircraft (registration 9N-AME) crashed today in Nepal killing 18 people (17 passengers and one pilot). According to the Nepalese authorities, the commander was the only person on board to have survived. It is the provisional toll of a plane crash that occurred during take-off of the aircraft, which according to some rumors should have reached a maintenance center.
According to an initial reconstruction of the accident, the aircraft had taken off from Tribhuvan international airport, near the capital Kathmandu, and was headed to Pokhara, an important tourist center in the Himalayan republic. Suddenly, for reasons still under investigation, as the plane took off from runway 02, the aircraft skidded onto the asphalt, then once in the air it veered onto its right side, crashing about 200 meters away and catching fire.
This was reported by the local newspaper "Kathmandu Post", which cites an airport official and the police as sources. Nepalese authorities reported that the accident occurred today at 11:15 local time (7:30 in Italy). The aircraft was operated by Saurya Airlines. According to some preliminary information, there were some maintenance engineers and other airline personnel on board the plane.
