Eurofighter airplane accident (2): Sydney releases details
It was the first time that the Italian Air Force participated in the "Pitch Black" exercise
The Australian authorities have made some details official on the plane crash that today involved a Eurofighter Typhoon F-2000 fighter aircraft of the Italian Air Force (AMI). Rescuers and government officials in Sydney confirmed that the fighter jet crashed near the city of Darwin in the Douglas Daly region during the "Pitch Black 24" military exercise.
"Defense can confirm that an international participant in the 'Pitch Black 24' exercise is safe and sound after ejecting from his aircraft this morning during flight operations. All flights for the remainder of the day have been cancelled", said in a note an official from the Australian Department of Defense, led by Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles.
According to the Australian authorities, the accident occurred today, Wednesday 24 July 2024, around 10:45 local time (3:15 am in Italy). The pilot, who saved himself by ejecting from the aircraft, "made immediate contact via radio with the crew in the area after the ejection". It was the first time that the Italian Armed Forces took part in the biennial military exercise "Pitch Black", which involves complex missions with aircraft from various countries simulating support operations at potential critical points in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea.
