Genoa Airport: members evaluate new shared project

MSC ready to take over 15% stake

The fate of the Italian "Cristoforo Colombo" airport in Sestri will be decided in July. In fact, the maritime group Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) recently made an offer for the acquisition of a 15% stake in the Genova Airport company. A move supported by the municipal administration of the Ligurian capital, which sponsored the sale of the share from the Aeroporti di Roma company to the shipping company.

The board of directors of the airport of the Genoa Airport company meets today and on 29 July 2024. This is an occasion in which the majority shareholders (the Western Ligurian Sea Port System Authority with 60% , the Genoa Chamber of Commerce with 25%) will have to resolve any doubts on three issues: the sale of 15% to MSC; the coverage of the 2023 budget hole of -3.5 million euros; a possible recapitalization of 4.8 million euros.

According to rumours, MSC, once it has acquired 15% of the shares, could then buy the absolute majority of Genoa Airport with the aim of directly managing the airport. However, the new commissioner of the port authority, Admiral Massimo Seno, has only recently taken matters into his own hands and must evaluate the procedures as best as possible. For its part, the other partner, the Chamber of Commerce, would be willing to do its part only when it sees a specific airport development project on the table. July will be a month to clarify perspectives among members.
