Flights delayed and cancelled: fear of Summer chaos

At the end of June, an increase compared to the same period last year

A chaotic end of June for the global air transport sector. In the week from Monday 24 to Sunday 30 June, planes operating in Europe accumulated 1.9 million minutes of delay. A performance that marks an increase of +153% compared to the same period last year and +125% compared to 2019. Furthermore, from Friday 28th to the end of the month, Europe recorded half of the canceled flights worldwide; the data is worrying.

This is what emerges from the monitoring of Eurocontrol, an intergovernmental organization that aims to develop and maintain an efficient air traffic control system in the Eu. Data corroborated by those contained in the "FlightAware" platform, according to which on Friday 28 June around 600 air connections in Europe were cancelled, while another 8000 scheduled flights accumulated delays of more than 15 minutes.

This is a worrying figure, considering the boom in flights that will take place in August. In fact, the delays and cancellations were partly caused by some limitedly controllable factors, such as bad weather conditions, but also the chronic shortage of staff in airlines, airport management companies and bodies responsible for air traffic control.
