Italy hopes for responsible European defense

Giorgia Meloni (premier): "We need to accelerate on the path to a common industrial policy"

Accelerate to build a common European defense industrial policy. This is the position of the Italian Government in Europe, as reiterated in recent hours during a briefing to the Chamber of Deputies in view of the Prime Minister's participation in the meeting of the Council of the European Union. The Executive also highlighted the "steps forward" made by the European Investment Bank (EIB), which increased the funds allocated for Defence.

"We must assume our responsibilities: freedom and security have a cost and to have peace at the borders we must be capable of achieving deterrence, even more so to build that solid European pillar of NATO that can face new security challenges", declared the President of the Italian Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni.

"Spending on defense means investing autonomously, defending national interests, counting and deciding, this is the path that Europe must follow" but "the resource issue is fundamental to make a leap in quality". We need to "equip ourselves with a security and defense policy that is worthy of its role: we had deluded ourselves that peace would spread to our neighbours, history went differently".
