USA: federal prosecutor against Boeing

By July 7, the US Department of Justice will have to decide whether to initiate a criminal prosecution

The American Boeing Group could soon be involved in a criminal action started by the American government to compensate the families of the victims of the two plane crashes in 2018 and 2019, when two 737 Max planes crashed, causing the death of 346 people. This is what the US federal prosecutor's office, led by Judge Merrick Garland, recommends. By July 7, the US Department of Justice must make a decision.

It was reported by the US newspaper "The Washington Post", which cites people familiar with the dossier as sources. The request commits the Department of Justice to choose how to proceed against Boeing, accused of having violated an agreement stipulated in 2021 which provided for, upon payment of 2.5 billion dollars in compensation to the families of the victims, the suspension of criminal proceedings against the manufacturer regarding the two fatal plane crashes.

Now the Department of Justice has various options: among these also the possibility of indicting Boeing, after having already reported in May 2024 (after the in-flight blowout of the door of a B-737 MAX 9 on January 5, 2024, due to of four missing screws according to NTSB) the failure to comply with the 2021 agreements, which three years ago had allowed the Group to avoid criminal proceedings, and therefore further compensation.
