Germany purchases Eurofighter planes

Panavia Tornado combat aircraft out of service by 2030

Germany will purchase 20 more Eurofighter Typhoon warplanes, the national government announced today. This is a move with which Berlin intends to increase the amount of funds allocated to the defense sector. An initiative that is part of the recommendations made by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to allied countries, asking them to increase the money spent on armaments up to 2% of GDP.

"We are strongly committed to maintaining and expanding armaments production capacity" in Europe and Germany. This is why we will order another 20 Eurofighter aircraft before the end of this legislature, in addition to the 38 aircraft currently in the pipeline", declared the German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, underlining that this order would give oxygen to the manufacturer Airbus and its suppliers.

The new planes will be destined for the German Air Force. In fact, Berlin is modernizing its fleet and aims to withdraw the current 98 Panavia Tornado combat aircraft from service by 2030. The airplanes, acquired in the 1980s and 1990s, will be replaced by Eurofighter warplanes, which Germany currently manages 138 units.
