Taiwan: swears in new president Lai
In his inaugural speech he invites Beijing to dialogue
The new President of the Republic of Taiwan, William Lai, was sworn in today, Monday, May 20, 2024, as the new Head of State. In his inaugural speech, after taking the oath of office, he urged Beijing to replace confrontation with dialogue and also said that Taiwan will never surrender in the face of intimidation from China.
Beijing "ceases political and military intimidation against Taiwan, shares with Taiwan the global responsibility for maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and the broader region, and ensures that the world is free from fears of war", the new president in his inauguration speech.
"A glorious era of democracy has arrived in Taiwan" which is an "important link" in a "global chain of democracies". "The future of the Chinese Republic of Taipei -added Lai- will be decided by its 23 million inhabitants. The future we decide is not only the future of our Nation, but the future of the world". This is "the greatest strategic challenge to global peace and stability".
