Indonesia: volcano erupts, airports closed

More than 11,000 people evacuated and tsunami danger

More than 11,000 people evacuated and airports closed within a 100 kilometer radius in Indonesia due to a violent eruption of the Ruang volcano, located near the islet of Thulandang, north of the large island of Sulawesi. The eruptive activity began on Tuesday and continues intensely in these hours. For this reason, the authorities have raised the alert to the highest level and the risk of a tsunami cannot be ruled out.

The "Sam Ratulangi" international airport in Manado, a city located more than 100 kilometers from the Ruang volcano, is closed. The airport's management company was forced to close the infrastructure "due to the spread of volcanic ash which could put flight safety at risk", said Ambar Suryoko, director of the Manado region's port and airport authority.

The eruption of the Ruang volcano, 725 meters high, began on the night of Tuesday 16 April 2024; since then authorities have counted at least five major lava emissions, with clouds of ash spreading across the skies. The director of the national volcanological agency, Hendra Gunawan, warned that Mount Ruang could partially collapse into the water and cause a tsunami due to the intense activity.
