After almost 20 years, the rule at airports that prevents passengers from carrying more than 100 milliliters of liquids in their hand luggage will be abolished in some European countries. The rule came into force in 2006 to increase security against possible terrorist attacks. This is a breakthrough made possible by the introduction of new scanners with X-ray technology. 

This technology was first tested in Europe in March 2022 at Ireland's Shannon Airport. Now some of these new systems have also been introduced at the British international airports of Teesside-Durham and London City Airport, as well as at Amsterdam-Schiphol airport. At the moment, in Italy these technologies are present at the "Enrico Forlanini" airport of Milan-Linate, at Terminal 1 of Milan-Malpensa, at T1 of the "Leonardo da Vinci" of Rome-Fiumicino and at the "Sandro Pertini" of Turin- Boxes.

Thanks to these security scanners, produced by the Sens-Tech company, which use artificial intelligence and computerized tomography (CT) X-ray technology similar to that used in medicine, at the check-in gates it will be possible to have a clear and three-dimensional image of what is inside travellers' bags: they are able to distinguish every single liquid and what appears suspicious will be further checked.
