Airport fire in Kenya
Terminal 1E for international flights was destroyed by flames
The "Jomo Kenyatta" international airport in Nairobi, Kenya, is on fire. A blaze broke out this morning in one of Africa's main airports. No casualties or injuries were reported. Some international flights operated at the damaged terminal, which hosts flights from companies such as British Airways, Qatar Airways, Emirates and Lufthansa, have been cancelled. Activities have been temporarily moved to Terminal 1A.
It was communicated by the Kenya Airport Authority (KAA), specifying that the flames broke out in Terminal 1E and were probably caused by a short circuit: "The situation was quickly contained. Following this, the electricity in the Terminal has been temporarily stopped as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of everyone within our premises,” the authority said in a statement.
Nairobi airport was rebuilt and expanded after a major fire which occurred on 7 August 2013, again caused by problems with the electrical system. In June 2015, a new, fully functional temporary terminal became operational until the completion of the new permanent structure, which opened on July 1, 2014 and was renamed Terminal 1A.
