Israel: Italy against attack on Rafah
Netanyahu indicates delegation that will be in Washington to talk about peace and war
International community concerned by the decision of the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, to launch a military operation towards Rafah, on the border with Egypt, with the aim of completely neutralizing Hamas from the Gaza Strip. There is fear of a further massacre of civilians, with deaths having already exceeded 31,000. Meanwhile, Italy also sides with the Palestinians. And Washington is preparing a meeting with Tel Aviv.
"We will reiterate our opposition to ground military action by Israel in Rafah, which could have even more catastrophic consequences on the civilians crowded in that area", said the President of the Italian Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, in her speech to the Senate in view of the European Council on 21 and 22 March.
"We will reaffirm -he added- the need to ensure the safe delivery of humanitarian aid and support for the 'Amalthea' initiative for a maritime canal from Cyprus to Gaza aimed at the delivery of the aid itself. Without prejudice, of course, to the need to open new land routes that remain a priority".
In the past few hours, the office of the Israeli prime minister, Netanyahu, announced the sending of two of the prime minister's most trusted collaborators to Washington: the minister of strategic affairs Ron Dermer, and the national security advisor Tzachi Hanegbi. The Biden administration will talk about continuing the war against Hamas, trying to avert the operation in Rafah, which heralds a bloodbath. The White House says that the meeting will probably take place this weekend or early next weekend.
