ITA-Lufthansa: notification from Brussels within days
Rome will have to provide a response to the EU within a month
The arrival of the notification is expected within this week, with the technicians of the European Competition Commission, led by Marghrethe Vestager, will communicate the critical issues that, according to Brussels, the ITA-Lufthansa marriage could generate on the national, international and intercontinental markets. It will be decisive days for the privatization of the national airline. Within a month Rome will have to provide a response to the European Union.
The observations (Statement of Objections) of the Directorate General of European Antitrust will be delivered to the German Aviation Group and to the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) led by Giancarlo Giorgetti, sole shareholder of ITA. The notification should also contain some possible solutions to avoid the Competition Commission blocking the ITA-Lufthansa marriage.
The couple's goal is to get the green light by spring. Beyond this deadline, in fact, the operation could be seriously compromised, an eventuality that both Frankfurt and Rome exclude. The determination of future timelines will depend on the objections presented in the "Statement of Objections", and the efforts that both companies are willing to make.
