Aircraft and strike in Germany
A 48-hour mobilization underway among airport security workers
A 48-hour strike in the air transport sector begins today in Germany. Airport security workers at the airports of Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne, Stuttgart and Karlsruhe-Baden Baden are involved (Thursday 14 March 2024), in addition to Hannover, Dortmund, Weeze, Dresden, Leipzig (Friday 15 March 2024). Frankfurt is not affected by the protest. The mobilization was called by the German trade union Verdi.
The German airport association Flughafenverband Adv (Arbeitsgemeinschaft Deutscher Verkehrsflughäfen) estimates that more than 580 flights could be canceled on Thursday 14 March and that around 90,000 passengers will be forced to reschedule their trips.
The Verdi union is calling for an increase in hourly wages of +2.80 Euros, higher production bonuses, and better conditions for overtime. The aim is to counteract the increase in inflation. The German association of airport security companies Bundesverband der Luftsicherheitsunternehmen (Bdls) presented a counter-proposal, which was deemed "unsatisfactory", said trade unionist Wolfgang Pieper. Negotiations will resume on March 20.
