Sweden will join NATO

The Hungarian Parliament lifted the veto, giving the green light

Sweden will join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The last green light among the member of the Atlantic Alliance arrived late yesterday afternoon, Monday 26 February, when the Hungarian Parliament approved by majority, both the government parties and the opposition, the entry of Stockholm in the Atlantic Pact. In exchange, the Scandinavian state will enhance cooperation on the Saab Gripen fighter planes used by Budapest.

"Sweden's entry into NATO will strengthen Hungary's security", as demonstrated by the visit to the country by Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, an essential step towards building "a fair and respectful relationship between the two Nations", overcoming the "differences of opinion", Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban declared in parliament shortly before the vote.

Sweden had asked to join the Atlantic Alliance in 2022, after the Russian military invasion of Ukraine. Hungary was the only NATO member that had not yet ratified Stockholm's request. After the favorable vote, Hungarian President László Kövér will have to promulgate the law in the next few days. Stockholm will subsequently submit its request for official membership, becoming the 32nd component of the Atlantic Alliance.
