Colombia: helicopter crashes, victims

Second fatal crash of a "Black Hawk" this month

A UH-60A "Black Hawk" helicopter from the Anti-Narcotics Directorate of the National Police of Colombia crashed today, killing four officers. It is the second fatal plane crash in a month involving this aircraft model, after the one that occurred on February 5 on the border with Panama, in which four soldiers died.

According to an initial reconstruction of the accident, the helicopter took off this morning from a base in Medellín, in the north-west of Colombia, heading towards Tuluá, in the south-west of the country. Shortly after takeoff, air traffic controllers lost contact with the crew. Alerted, the police started the search. The helicopter was found in the middle of a dense forest in the Río Blanco area, in the municipality of Caramanta, in the department of Antioquia.

According to initial rumours, the accident occurred due to poor weather conditions. This is the list of victims: Major Juan Carlos Morales, Captain César Andrés Rodríguez, Second Lieutenants Feder Alejandro Celis and Rafael Antonio González, according to what General William René Salamanca communicated.
