Italy starts investigation into Ryanair Holdings

Possible abuse of dominant position against travel agencies

The Italian investigation started to ascertain a possible abuse of a dominant position has been extended to the company Ryanair Holdings "consisting in precluding purchases by travel agencies, both physical and online, of Ryanair tickets via its website and in the offer of worsening conditions via GDS" (Global Distribution System), that is computer reservation systems. The Italian Competition and Market Authority (Agcm) announced it today.

The authority explained that this choice by Ryanair has "prevented and hindered the agencies themselves in the sale of the company's airline tickets -which typically represent the 'access point' for the sale of further services- in order to encourage direct sales of airline tickets on their site".

Thus "prejudicing the development of effective competition in the markets for the sale of tourist services, to the detriment of travel agencies and with negative effects on the well-being of consumers who use these operators". In its weekly bulletin, the Italian Antitrust has set the deadline for completing the proceedings at 31 December 2024.
