In the past few hours, Taiwan's armed forces have concluded two days of military exercises involving the island's maritime and air forces. During the maneuvers, which included defense operations on the disputed island, surprise attacks by China were simulated. The training is a response to growing threats from Beijing, which has sent seven planes and four warships in the last 24 hours.

"Any irrational unilateral action could easily increase tensions and sabotage stability in the Taiwan Strait region", said Major General Sun Li-fang, spokesperson for Taiwan's defense ministry, in a briefing with reporters held at the Tsuoying military naval base, in the south of the island.

China claims Taiwan as its own territory, arguing that it should come under Beijing's control. The question of the autonomy of this island of 23 million inhabitants, disliked by Beijing, is an issue that creates tensions in the already complex relations between Washington and Taipei Taiwan. In fact, the United States, together with the "Five Eyes" countries, keep the Indo-Pacific area under control, trying to prevent escalation of violence.
