Myanmar: military helicopter crashes, four victims

Aircraft reportedly shot down by "Karen" rebel militias

An AS-365/N2 "Dauphin II" military helicopter (registration 690) of the Myanmar Air Force crashed to the ground in the past few hours. There were six people on board the aircraft, including a well-known local politician. The toll from the aircraft crash is four victims. National media report that the rotary-wing craft was shot down by rebel militias.

According to a first reconstruction of the accident, the helicopter, which was part of the fleet of the 523 Squadron of the National Air Force, was transporting a politician from the local junta. Suddenly it seems that armed men from the "Karen" National Union opened fire on the aircraft, killing the pilot, who at that point lost control of the rotorcraft. Then it crashed at Thingannyinaung, near Myawaddy on the Thai coast.
