Israel: genocide trial begins

Dossier presented by South Africa, first international court hearing today

The first hearing at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) against Israel begins today in The Hague, Netherlands, for alleged violations of international law in the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip against the Palestinians. The accusation against Tel Aviv is that of genocide. The case was submitted to the judges at the end of December by South Africa, whose speech is scheduled in the courtroom from 10:00 to 13:00. Tel Aviv hearing tomorrow.

"Our opposition to the ongoing massacre of the people of Gaza has pushed us as a country to address the International Court of Justice, as a people who have tasted the bitter fruits of dispossession, discrimination, racism and state-sponsored violence, we are clear that we will stand on the right side of history", said South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The complaint is based on two pieces of evidence: the extent of the devastation in Gaza and the large number of Palestinian victims (around 23,000 according to Hamas), testifying to an alleged policy of massacres against civilians carried out by Tel Aviv. Accusations collected in 84 pages. South Africa asks the court to immediately order a temporary halt to the military campaign in Gaza.
