Argentina: military aircraft against drug trafficking

Government prepares decree that allows the armed forces to collaborate with the Police

The Government of Argentina, led by President Javier Gerardo Milei, is preparing a decree that would allow the armed forces to collaborate with the Police in the fight against drug trafficking and terrorism. In particular, this initiative would allow the use of the Air Force fleet to strengthen the control and patrolling of the national airspace over specific areas where drug traffickers operate.

It was reported by the national television station "Todo Noticias", relaunching the words pronounced by the defense minister, Luis Petri, on the occasion of the recent designation of the Chief of the General Staff of the Argentine Air Force, Brigadier Xavier Isaac: it is necessary to "modernize the legislation and the armed forces to put them at the service of the reconstruction of the homeland".

The decree will allow the military to control borders, monitor strategic objectives and provide logistical support to other security forces. According to Argentine media, a new directive on national defense policy will also be drawn up, as part of a series of reforms that aim to expand Buenos Aires' military presence, with the aim of pursuing the "key objectives" of the Latin American country.
