ITA-Lufthansa: concessions in Brussels
Yes to the transfer of slots at Milan-Linate airport
The German aviation group Lufthansa would have offered "concessions" to the European Competition Commission as "remedies" to obtain the green light for the acquisition of a 41% share (with a capital increase of 325 million euros) of the carrier ITA Airways flag carrier. The objective would be to close the game by the deadline of "phase 1" of verification, which ends on January 15th.
It was reported by the news site "Bloomberg", citing sources close to the dossier. Among the "remedies" there would be the sale of some airport slots in the "Enrico Forlanini" airport of Milan-Linate. Brussels received notification of the ITA-Lufthansa deal on November 30, 2023. Despite this concession, the European Antitrust is expected to continue with further investigations until May.
The competition commission had in fact reported that the ITA-Lufthansa marriage would have led to an "overlap mainly for the provision of passenger air transport services": on slots and routes at Linate airport; on short-haul routes from Rome and Milan to cities in Germany, Belgium and Switzerland; on medium and long-haul destinations from Italy and Switzerland to America, Africa and Asia.
