Tokyo airplane crash: JAL estimates 105 million losses

Aircraft destruction compensated by insurance company

Japan Airlines announced today that it estimates the economic losses resulting from the plane crash that occurred in recent days at Tokyo-Haneda airport at 105 million dollars. The A-350/900 aircraft (registration JA13XJ) of the airline was in fact devoured by flames after colliding, immediately after landing, with a de Havilland Dash 8/315Q plane (registration JA722A) of the Japanese Coast Guard, which was carrying out the taxiing phase.

Transcripts released by the authorities show that the air traffic controller had ordered the Coast Guard Dash 8 aircraft to proceed only to a holding area near runway 34R. An instruction that the pilot seems to have interpreted as a signal to enter the runway, where JAL's A-350 was landing. Investigations to establish responsibility are currently continuing.

But let's go back to the economic effects of the accident. The loss of the Japan Airlines A-350 plane, destroyed by the fire, will be covered by insurance. The airline had in fact signed, with the American AIG, a two-year "all-risks" policy worth 130 million dollars. The losses of 105 million dollars therefore relate to the expected impact on earnings for the financial year ending 31 March 2024.
