Iceland: eruption will not impact air transport

Pagani: "Aircrafts fly over the volcano, land and depart, perhaps there will be some delay"

The volcano eruption in Iceland is not expected to cause any particular disruption to air transport. The lava activity, which began on Monday in the Reykjanes peninsula, in the south-west of the country, emitted columns of smoke more than 100 meters high, after weeks of intense seismic activity. However, authorities say that the cloud is flowing away from Keflavík airport, and that the intensity of the eruption is decreasing.

"Air traffic should not be impacted because the eruption occurred under lava ground and not under ice, so the lava flows without producing ash''. So even if "the volcano is located near the international airport, the planes fly over the volcano calmly and land, leave, maybe there will be delays because the situation needs to be monitored, but it is not a danger for flights'', explains Roberto Luigi Pagani, writer for "National Geographic" magazine.

The government of Reykjavikh has reassured passengers on international air travel, worried that the chaos resulting from the ash cloud caused by the eruption in 2010 could be repeated. On that occasion the clouds coming from the Eyafjallajokull volcano spread over much of Europe, blocking around 100,000 flights and forcing hundreds of Icelanders to evacuate their homes.
