Italy: Milan prepares air taxis for 2026

Airport operator Sea receives first green light from the capital's municipal council

The Milan City Council has authorized the Airport Operations Company (Sea), which controls the Linate and Malpensa airports, to set up a connection service to the center of the Lombard capital using air taxis, that is Electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVtol). This is an important step to be ready for the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.

The plan in Milan envisages the creation of a vertiport designed as a hub at Malpensa airport, "while the city vertiports will be rather small, of 3000-4000 thousand square metres, with a small terminal for check-in and security checks", explained Armando Brunini, CEO of Sea.

However, to date, despite the approximately 15,000 aircraft ordered so far in the world, no company that builds them has yet obtained a certification that allows these vehicles to fly. Neither the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) nor the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have yet authorized an air taxi.

So what to do? According to experts, we need to wait until 2024, the year in which the first authorization for the transport of passengers on board eVtol could arrive. A move that would kick off a revolution in the air transport and urban mobility sectors. Meanwhile, Milan is preparing for the Olympics in collaboration with the companies Skyports and 2i Aeroporti, specialized in the design, construction and management of vertiports.
