UK: Sheffield airport about to reopen

New manager expected in 2024, after rescue plan approved by the municipality

The British "Robin Hood" airport in Doncaster-Sheffield could soon return to operation. In fact, negotiations will begin next week to find an investor who believes in the airport. Closed for a year, estimates of the turnover that the terminal could generate have pushed the municipal administration to support the closing of the operation, labeled as "financially sustainable".

"The reopening of Doncaster-Sheffield airport is my priority. We were right to have confidence in the potential of the airport, because even the first comparisons with the market were positive and suggest substantial interest on the part of potential operators. The discussions with the current landowners have led us to believe that there is a realistic possibility of agreeing a lease for the airport, which would allow us to speed up the reopening process", said Doncaster Mayor Ros Jones.

The mayor's plan is as follows: Peel Group would retain ownership of the airport, but would lease it to the municipality, which would appoint an airport operator to manage it on its behalf. Doncaster council estimates the airport could become profitable after five years, carrying two million passengers after ten years, creating 5,000 jobs. So far 15 companies have expressed interest. Appointment expected in March 2024.
