Waiting for the return of the "Osiris Rex" space mission
The tests could reveal new insights into the mysteries of the solar system and life on Earth
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa) announced that experts are ready to take delivery of the 250 grams of space rock, collected three years ago from the asteroid Bennu during the "Osiris Rex" space mission. The samples should arrive on Earth on September 24, 2023. There is anticipation, because the material could reveal new information about the mysteries of the solar system and perhaps the birth of life on Earth.
''We are now just weeks away from receiving a piece of solar system history back to Earth, and this successful drop test ensures we are ready. The pristine material from asteroid Bennu will help shed light on the formation of our solar system 4.5 billion years ago, and perhaps even how life began on Earth", said Nicola Fox, associate administrator of the Science Mission Directorate of NASA.
The test conducted by NASA to achieve a safe return of the precious material was conducted with "a model of NASA's Osiris-REx (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer) capsule" which "was released on Wednesday by a plane" and landed in the Utah desert, at the Test and Training Range of the US Department of Defense.
