London-City Airport: expansion blocked
Local authorities decision for acoustic and environmental pollution problems
Newham City Council has rejected the airport management company's proposed expansion of London-City Airport. The latter wanted to extend the opening hours of the airport, as well as increase the number of scheduled air connections at the weekend and at dawn. The goal is to bring the number of passengers in transit annually from 6.5 to 9 million.
However, the plan was blocked by local authorities due to concerns about noise and environmental pollution on residents of the conurbation, which would be generated by the addition of new flights. The airport, popular with business travelers due to its proximity to the financial districts of the London Stock Exchange, has always operated on strict schedules due to its location in a densely populated area in the east of the English capital.
"We are disappointed with the decision and are actively considering taking further steps. We strongly believe in our proposals, which are carefully balanced and make the most of our infrastructure", said the airport manager. However, to date the government agency Planning Inspectorate has reversed decisions taken by various city councils which blocked the expansion of flight programs at London-Stansted and Bristol airports.
