Italy-Libya flights will be back

Agreement in Tripoli to end the veto that had lasted for ten years

Direct flights between Italy and Libya will be restored, probably next September and there will be greater cooperation in the skies between the two countries. It emerged during the meeting in Tripoli which took place in recent days between the president of the Italian Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC) Pierluigi Di Palma, the Italian ambassador Gianluca Alberini, the Libyan Minister of State Walid al Lafi, and the president of the Libyan Civil Aviation Authority (LCAA), Mohamed Shlebik. An agreement that revokes a ban that has been in force for ten years. 

"The Italian Government has informed us of its decision to lift the ban on air transit imposed on Libyan civil aviation ten years ago, allowing flights to resume next September. I thank Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, I appreciate the efforts of the transport sector and of the committee formed in this regard, and all those who have contributed to achieving this breakthrough to facilitate the movement of our citizens", wrote the premier of the Government of National Unity (GUN), Abdulhamid Dabaiba on Twitter.

According to local media: "The two sides have agreed to conclude an agreement and a memorandum of understanding, to reopen the airspace between the two countries and to choose a Libyan air carrier and another Italian one to resume flights to and from the Italy at the latest next August, provided that the first direct commercial flight from Libya to Italy takes off next September".
