Sydney Airport: second runway reopened
At least 100 flights cancelled due to strong gusts of wind
Sydney's Kingsford Smith International Airport is back in full operation. In fact, both take-off and landing runways have become available again, after the strong gusts of wind that whipped the airport this morning, limiting services to just one runway. All this has created enormous inconvenience, with over 100 flight connections canceled or delayed and possible repercussions until late today.
The airport security company Airservices Australia intervened in blocking the runway around 7:00 local time (11:00 in Italy) due to strong gusts of wind from the west. Then at 15:00 (7:00 in Italy) the winds eased and the runway was reopened. According to some experts, the inconvenience will continue in the next six months, due to the shortage of personnel, so much so that Airservices Australia is recruiting 50 air traffic controllers.
"This decision is related to weather conditions and safety. This will affect the network until 11pm today, with delays of one to two hours. Unfortunately, this could also lead to some airlines deciding to cancel a number of flights", a spokesman for the airport operator said.
