India: causes of Dhruv helicopter accidents

Identified possible design and construction material issues

Flight safety is always in the spotlight in India. In these first months of 2023, the Dhruv light helicopters of the armed forces of New Delhi have recorded at least five accidents or incidents. In just over five years, 55 soldiers have lost their lives in over 50 accidents. The state-owned aircraft manufacturer Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) had in fact launched an investigation, and has now discovered further problems.

The company's technicians would have identified some design problems in the helicopter and in the materials used in the construction of some components. It emerges from a detailed examination conducted internally by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited itself, which identified these as probable defects.

It's an examination that began after a series of accidents, which involved the Indian army and air force fleet, forced to ground their fleets. The national armed forces have communicated that in total there are over 325 Dhruv helicopters supplied to the Navy, Air Force, Army and Coast Guard.
