Israel: Haifa airport reopens after 4 years
The stopover returns to serve the Greek islands and Cyprus, its main destinations
Israel's Haifa airport reopens after a four-year hiatus. Air connections resumed in the past few hours, thanks to the Maltese company Universal Air, which has operated three direct flights to Cyprus: two to Larnaca airport and another to Paphos. Located in northern Israel, the small airport, closed before the pandemic, has returned to serving the Greek islands, its main destinations.
Israel's airport architecture foresees that international flights are operated mainly from the central "Ben Gurion" airport in Tel Aviv, while tourist air connections at the Eliat-Ramon airport, in the South of the country, near the Red Sea, for precisely in the hinterland of the tourist city of Eilat. So, Haifa airport, on the other hand, about 1300 meters long, only allows the flight of small aircraft operating short-haul routes.
Plans to extend the runway have been considered several times in recent years, but have proved difficult to implement. This is mainly due to the construction of numerous infrastructures along the coastal strip of the Haifa Bay, which hosts important civilian seaports, an Israeli navy port of call and a shipyard.
