United States: United will send vouchers to phones

In case of cancellations and other inconveniences, the airline will contact travelers directly

US carrier United Airlines will begin sending vouchers for food and hotel vouchers to passengers' smartphones in the event of sudden cancellations and flight delays of at least three hours caused by the company. These will be delivered via smartphone application and website. The company communicates it in a note, claiming that this will ease the pressure on customer service on the phone and at the airport.

"If the customer is already stressed, we don't want them waiting in line". Some travelers may not know how to use these new technologies, but "the more we can help people who are technically savvy, the more time we can spend helping those who aren't", explained Linda Jojo, airline's Chief Customer Officer.

The initiative is a concrete response along the lines of the Biden administration. The transport department said it would seek new rules to force airlines to compensate passengers for delays and cancellations. A move to counter the boom in airport inconvenience of the last two years: about 2% of cancellations (about 1% in 2023) from April 1st to June 19th 2022 and almost 22% of delays.
