The Prosecutor of Naples has entered eight people in the register of suspects in the context of an investigation into Colombiagate. This is an attempt to sell Italian-made military ships and aircraft to the Colombian government. In detail, the Alenia Aermacchi M-346 Master aircraft produced by the Leonardo Group, together with corvettes, small submarines and equipment for shipyards made by Fincantieri. The value of the deal exceeded 4 billion euros. 

The suspects are charged with the crime of aggravated international corruption. Ending up under the scrutiny of the investigators are: the ex-President of the Council of Ministers Massimo D'Alema; his ex-accountant Gherardo Gardo; Leonardo's ex-CEO Alessandro Profumo; the ex-general manager of the naval vessels division of Fincantieri Giuseppe Giordo. Searches were carried out at the homes and offices of the four, reports the "Ansa" news agency. In addition to them, Umberto Claudio Bonavita, Francesco Amato, Emanuele Caruso and Giancarlo Mazzotta are also under investigation. 

According to a summary reconstruction of the Colombiagate case: two subjects who worked as consultants for international cooperation in the Colombian foreign ministry had managed to get in touch with D'Alema. The latter, considering the two "curricula with positions of international importance", had positioned himself as an "informal mediator" in relations with the corporate management of Leonardo and Fincantieri. 

To conclude the deal 40 million euros (out of a total of 80 million commission) would have been offered to Colombian public officials including Edgardo Fierro Flores (head of the working group for the presentation of opportunities in Colombia), Marta Lucia Ramirez ( foreign minister and vice-president of Colombia), German Monroy Ramirez and Francisco Joya Prieto (delegates of the commission of the Senate of Colombia) and others "to be identified".
