"Amsterdam Airport has no shame"

Gibes from dg Walsh (Iata) against rate increases and slot management

The global aviation industry has experienced a period of robust recovery in the last year after a long recession due to the covid-19 pandemic, followed by the Russo-Ukrainian war and the increase in the price of jet fuel. It is what the International Air Transport Association (Iata) communicated during the 79th annual meeting which is being held in Istanbul, Turkey, from 4 to 6 June.

Some airports "have shifted the costs of their inefficiencies onto the airlines. On this point I can confirm that Amsterdam-Schiphol has no shame. After an operational disaster in 2022, the airport continues its three-year fare increase of +37 %, up 12% this year", said Iata General Director Willie Walsh.

And that's not the only lash against the airport. In fact, the director underlined the importance of fully implementing global standards regarding the management of slots at the Dutch airport, to avoid "problems arising".

In particular, Walsh highlighted that "the Dutch government has imposed a -12% capacity reduction in a crude attempt to manage noise pollution. We have won a court case because Amsterdam has not honored its commitments under the "ICAO approach. The Dutch government is appealing", but "an industry focused on security cannot accept the politicization of technical discussions. The message is simple: global standards are fundamental".
