Hamburg's German airport is betting on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and hydrogen to decarbonise the aviation sector. It's the result of a new collaboration signed with Lufthansa Technik, a division of the homonymous German Group that deals with MRO services (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul) and other operations in the aviation sector.

"For this purpose, an Airbus A-320 family aircraft will be converted into a stationary laboratory at the Lufthansa Technik base in Hamburg. Within this laboratory, the partners want to test the effects of liquid hydrogen (Lh2) on the maintenance and on ground processes. This aircraft will not take to the air, but will allow research to be carried out in a real environment", explained Lufthansa Technik. 

Since 2016, Hamburg airport has offered airlines the possibility of refueling their aircraft with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) produced by the Neste company from 100% renewable raw materials. This new agreement with Lufthansa Technik will now make it possible to test the management of hydrogen technology for two years, also thanks to partnerships with the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the Center for Applied Aviation Research (ZAL).
