The United States government has announced the introduction of a new rule regarding the obligation for air carriers to financially compensate the expenses that customers are forced to do in case of delays or cancellations of foreseeable flights. This is the proposal announced in the past few hours by US President Joe Biden and his transport secretary Pete Buttigieg. 

"When an airline causes a flight to be canceled or delayed, passengers do not have to foot the bill. This rule, for the first time in US history, would propose requiring airlines to compensate passengers and cover expenses such as meals, hotels and rebookings where the airline has caused" significant inconvenience, said Buttigieg. 

The Department of Transportation is also launching an online platform, called FlightRights.gov, to enhance this service by providing information to travelers about which companies "offer cash, travel credit, vouchers, frequent flyer miles, or other services" as a form of compensation.
