Kosovo: KFOR helicopters in action
Fundamental role of maintenance mechanics in the aeronautics
The helicopter mechanicals of the Task Force Aviation of the Kosovo Force Regional Command-East (Kfor Rc-e) work tirelessly to guarantee the flight safety of the soldiers and the efficiency of the aircraft, in all possible missions: patrolling, humanitarian aid to the population, medical transport.
"Every hour of flight requires about four hours of maintenance. The flying part wouldn't happen without the maintenance piece to keep them operating safely. We are often here until 8:00 in the evening, even on Saturdays. And depending on the requirements We're here on Sundays as well", said David Forbes, first sergeant, 131st Aviation Regiment.
The maintenance work is carried out by a team of 36 soldiers who take care of the UH-60 Black Hawk multi-role helicopters, the CH-47 Chinook transport helicopters and the AH-64 Apache attack helicopters: these make up the Kfor fleet. Quality control officers examine every aspect of the repairs carried out to ensure that they are within specification and that the maintainers are carrying out their work to standard.
