Brussels says yes to biofuel for aircraft

Commission approves "ReFuelEU Aviation" to blend Saf to kerosene

The European Commission welcomed the political agreement reached yesterday between the European Parliament and the European Council on the "ReFuelEU Aviation" proposal. Starting from 2025, these rules will require fuel suppliers to blend Sustainable Aviation Fuel (Saf) with kerosene in increasing quantities. The goal is to cut CO2 emissions in the aviation sector by 65% by 2050.

"The European agreement that opens up biofuels for aircraft is a step forward: now more courage is needed to foresee the same thing for cars too. Saying no would strengthen the belief that the European climate commissioner, Frans Timmermans, is fighting an ideological battle", said Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT) sources.

"A meaningless battle -they add- to the detriment of families and businesses and without real benefits for the environment. Italy, led by MIT, will continue to insist. The guiding star remains that of technological neutrality, reasonableness and concreteness".

According to the new rules, aviation fuel suppliers will have to make available a minimum share of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in European airports: starting with 2% blends by 2025, reaching 70% by 2050. The new the mixture must also contain a minimum amount, which increases over time, of the more modern and environmentally friendly synthetic biofuels. For their part, the airports will have to guarantee the availability and adequacy of their refueling infrastructures.
