Turkey unveils military ship with drones and helicopters
Inauguration in the presence of President Erdoğan
Turkey has recently inaugurated the amphibious assault ship "TCG Anadolu" in the presence of the President of the Republic Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. It is a vehicle designed for the transport of light aircraft, military drones and combat helicopters. It is Ankara's first domestically produced aircraft carrier. The goal is to improve the navy's aeronautical capabilities.
The unveiling of the new ship is a sign of the growth of Turkish ambitions in the defense sector. In fact, the industry has considerably developed in recent years and the country has invested heavily in research and development. With the geopolitical tensions triggered by the Russo-Ukrainian war, Turkey then made the strengthening of its local industrial base a priority, as evidenced by the 2019-23 strategic plan which plans to reach 75% of the production of assets and components nationwide.
The "Tcg Anadolu" helicopter carrier is an amphibious assault military maritime vessel developed by the Turkish shipyard Sedef Shipyard, in collaboration with the Spanish Navantia. It is a sort of miniature aircraft carrier destined to be used in operations in the Mediterranean Sea and in the Indian and Atlantic Oceans. Construction started in April 2016 and the first tests date back to 2021. The new assault ship is expected to enter service in 2023.
The carrier, 232 meters long and 32 meters wide, has a flight deck of 5440 square meters with six landing points and a take-off ramp. The vessel will have a crew of 260. "TCG Anadolu" will have the capacity to carry up to six Lockheed Martin F-35B aircraft, two Sikorsky SH-60 Seahawk helicopters, four Turkish Aerospace Industries T-129 Atak aircraft, eight transport helicopters and two TB-3 Bayraktar drones. It will be able to accommodate aircraft from NATO allied countries and Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey tiltrotors (aircraft-helicopters).
