Athens Airport inaugurates solar plant
Maxi installation made up of 29,214 photovoltaic panels on the roof of the airport
The manager of the Athens "Eleftherios Venizelos" international airport has inaugurated a new solar plant, with a power of 15.8 MW, installed on the roof of the infrastructure. According to some estimates, the photovoltaic panel system will make it possible to cover, thanks to an 8.05 MW installation already present, around 65% of the airport's electricity needs.
The planning and construction of the photovoltaic system took a total of nine months. The work was completed in February and inaugurated in recent days. The system is made up of 29,214 photovoltaic panels, which guarantee an annual energy production of 27.5 GWh (the consumption of 6,650 families), which will satisfy 46% of the airport's demand.
The new system has just been put into operation and is expected to last for 23 years. It will make it possible to avoid 71,500 tons of carbon dioxide emissions, reducing the harmful emissions of the airport by 90%. These works are part of the "Net Zero Route 2025" strategy, launched in 2019 with the aim of decarbonising the airport's consumption, in which the company has invested 100 million euros.
