New York airport: two workers died
The victims were working on the expansion of the "JFK" terminal
All work to expand the "John Fitzgerald Kennedy" airport in New York has been suspended. It was decided by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the management company of the US airport, following the death of two construction workers, in an accident that occurred in the late morning of 3 April. Authorities launched an investigation into the event. The site will reopen following an audit following safety inspections of construction operations.
According to the reconstruction of the facts, the two were working inside an excavation when suddenly, for reasons yet to be ascertained, a part of the terminal above them collapsed, killing both. They were a 28-year-old boy and a 41-year-old man who worked on the terminal's power lines. The intervention of the rescuers and dozens of colleagues was useless: once the rubble had been removed, the two bodies lay helpless on the ground.
No consequences on the flight schedule of the airport. The two men were working on the expansion of two airport terminals, a modernization project that involves transforming the historic Twa terminal into an elegant hotel; while the construction of the "New Terminal One" is scheduled for 2026, which will bring together the current T1, T2 and T3.
