Taiwan-China tensions continue
President Taipei will meet tomorrow American speaker
Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen, on her way back from her institutional trip to Central America (Guatemala and Belize), will meet with the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy tomorrow, April 5, in Los Angeles. After the threat of recent days to take "resolute countermeasures", China showed off its muscles tonight, sending a series of aircraft and ships near Taipei.
This was denounced by Taiwan's Defense Ministry, according to which at least 20 Chinese planes and three military ships have approached the territorial space of the island in the last 24 hours, which Beijing wants to bring under its full control even with force, considering it a rebellious island that has always belonged to China.
Mao Ning, spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, reiterated: "We strongly oppose any form of official interaction and contact between the United States and the Taiwanese authorities". Beijing will take measures to "safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity". Meanwhile Ing-wen has confirmed the meeting with McCarthy.
