Three solutions to improve air transport

Lounges, technologies and fleets to better compete with other airlines

Airport lounges, technological services, fleets and seats: these are three realistic solutions on which some US air carriers are focusing to improve the User Experience of the passenger transport service. These are the answers to the question of American Airlines (AA), which in the last few years has wondered how to win the competition against low-cost airlines and rival Delta Air Lines.

Let's start with technology services. AA has announced that it will offer customers the ability to book and manage their flight 100% online, going to the airport only for the journey. Furthermore, even on aircraft operating regional routes, he is thinking of introducing satellite wifi, to avoid hours of unproductive time. However, the cost of internet is still high (20 dollars one way) compared to other competitors, while Delta and JetBlue offer it for free.

Another bet to make is investment in an airplane. American Airlines wants to expand the Admirals Club model, consisting of a series of lounges at airports on five continents, including Rome, Milan and Venice. However, to establish itself on the American continent, in addition to Washington, it would have to inaugurate exclusive clubs in the airports of Denver, Newark and Austin, but no work has begun.

Finally, the question of aircraft fleets and seats. On the 787/800 aircraft, the management has provided 20 seats in Business class, considered by experts to be too few. Increasing their number on the B-777/300ER and B-787/900 would make them heavier. The A-319 does not have enough, but operates on premium routes where Business class is sold out days before departure. On this issue, the question of how to revolutionize the organization remains open.
