USA: US Navy orders Italian helicopters

Exercised option for four TH-73A trainer aircraft

The US Department of Defense has exercised its option to purchase a fourth batch of TH-73A "Trasher" model training helicopters, manufactured by the Italian Leonardo Group, which will be destined for the United States Navy (USN). There are 26 aircraft, for a value of 110.5 million dollars, to be delivered by the end of 2024. These new units will end their operational life in 2050.

The TH-73A helicopter is replacing the fleet of TH-57B/C "Sea Rangers" aircraft which are nearing the end of their operational life. The new rotorcraft will serve as the first training aircraft for thousands of new US Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard pilots. Personnel training is conducted at Whitin Field Base in Milton, Florida.

The contract for the initial lot of 32 TH-73A helicopters (176 million dollars) was awarded in 2020 under the Navy's Advanced Helicopter Training System (AHTS) program: the contract included spare parts, support, dedicated equipment and specific pilot training and maintenance services. The second batch of 36 units dates back to November 2020 (for 171 million), while the third is from 2021 (from 159.4 million dollars).
